The mechanical mice are being wound up and let loose to scurry around. They are everywhere, sometimes running across the floor, other times getting caught in the rug or running into a wall. Watch out for the cat! He pounces on the little critters and scatters them about. But don't worry - the mice will be back!
Technical Notes: The keyboard percussion part is labeled "Mallet Percussion" and contains the xylophone part. The 1st percussion part contains the cowbells (2) and vibraslap parts. The 2nd percussion part contains the woodblocks and ratchet (or guiro) parts.
Note to the Conductor: The bass ostinato parts should be light and quiet throughout this piece, with the main melody in the flutes played leggiero (light and graceful, with a touch of non-legato). The counter ostinato chords in the low woodwinds should be even softer than the bass ostinato, setting up a kind of rodent humming in the background. During the middle clicking section, let the players make any kind of mechanical (non-wind) noise they want with their instruments, provided it adds to the feel of mechanical mice scurrying around. HAVE FUN! This piece was meant to be whimsical, so enjoy it in the spirit in which it was written!
