From 1843 to 1869, more than a half-million people from several small towns along the Missouri River set out to follow the Oregon Train. Their goal was to begin new lives in what is now the western United States. Many emigrants traveled in wagons that carried their worldly goods along with supplies needed to survive the trip. These wagons were known as "prairie schooners" because of their distinctive shape and the fact that they provided an alternative to traveling by sea-going vessels. Through music, this composition portrays four scenes along the Oregon Trail.

Technical Notes: The percussion part is labeled "Percussion (Snare Drum, Crash Cymbals, Bass Drum, Sus. Cymbal, Sleigh Bells, Temple Blocks)".

Measures 1-9: Introduction

Measures 10-30: The "Jumping Off" point of the Oregon Trail was the city where emigrants would unload their wagon and supplies off the steamship that had carried them up the Missouri River.

Measures 31-45: The emigrants aboard their prairie schooners were called "Overlanders" to distinguish them from those who reached the West by sailing around South America. From morning until night, over miles and miles of dusty plains, traveling the Oregon Trail meant repeating the same routine day after day.

Measure 52-78: The travelers would often reach "Independence Rock" around the Fourth of July. Many of the pioneers chiseled their names into the rock and celebrated arriving at this important milestone.

Measures 79-end: After the long journey across the hot, dry plains, the sight of green "Grande Ronde" valley, encircled by mountain walls, assured the emigrants they were finally reaching their destination and the "Oregon" they expected to find.
