From a young age, we all remember hearing this melody, haunting us and helping us to make believe. This setting of "In The Hall Of Mountain King" is arranged for young musicians, and we're sure they'll enjoy playing one of the most programmatic pieces ever written.
Technical Notes: The Peer Gynt Suite was first performed in 1876 in Oslo, Norway. The ever-quickening tempo provides a test of mettle for the musicians and an enjoyable experience for the listener. Note To The Conductor: If you know this piece, you will find that it is close to the original. The opening tempo is gauged and steady. Your trumpet players get to try out a mute; you should talk about pitch and proper placement of the mute in the instrument. As the clarinets come in, stay true to dynamics and style. At measure 9, it will be easy for the saxophones to play too loudly, therefore "missing" the style. This is a great time to stress discipline. At measure 17, the quarter notes on beats 2 and 4 should not be short; rather, they should be long enough so that the harmonies can be heard. As the tempo begins to change, be careful not to change the style or play too loudly. The last presentation of the melody can be played as fast as possible, as long as it is still played cleanly. This setting will expose your musicians to some solid classical literature. The audience will know this piece and appreciate your teaching and performing it.
