In the days of the Roman Empire, a Centurion was a commissioned officer who held the rank of Captain and was in charge of a century (one hundred soldiers). These Centurions were very effective and important leaders in the Roman military. Generally there were sixty or so centuries in a legion, which was commanded by a general. "The Centurions" portrays, in music, the marching and maneuvers of the centuries as they march in a long parade of review, with their Centurion in the lead, before the Roman political leaders, thousands of military leaders, and citizens of the Roman Empire.
Technical Notes: Note to the conductor: A strong full tone and clean marcato (accented and separated) tonguing are required in this piece in order to capture the spirit of a great parade of triumph. The trumpet fanfare in measures 2 and 4, though marked at the same dynamic as the rest of the band, will need to be a bit louder and very detached in order to project through the band. In measures 33-40, the style briefly changes to legato (sustained). Be careful to preserve the tempo while changing the style. In measures 57 and 58, a tenuto mark has been added to make sure the notes fill the entire beat. This marking should in no way affect the style (marcato), just the length of those notes, which are marked accordingly. Keep the music majestic at all times, and let the students' imaginations focus on a long, majestic parade working its way through the streets of Rome with all the dignity and hoopla possible.
