Welcome to the fun-filled music world called Dixieland. With its never to be forgotten melodies, its well-defined harmonies, and its uncomplicated rhythms, the Dixieland style is a perfect vehicle for group and individual improvisation. This combo pak includes four classics you'll really enjoy!
Technical Notes: In this pack Paul Severson tried to recreate the different harmonic and contrapuntal movements that are the essence of Dixieland. When your group gains proficiency, moderate ad lib sections can be used, especially in the last ensemble choruses. Solos can be added to most of the arrangements to fit particular performance needs and to suit the number of soloists in the band. Just keep in mind that piano solos are often last in the solo sequence. Be sure the trumpet lead is heard at all times. The tenor sax can often overshadow the trumpet particularly in the trumpets middle and low registers. You can also go along with the early Dixieland bands and not use a tenor sax. If you have a banjo or guitar, the piano can be freed from a strictly rhythmic function to do simple "comping". On the last ensemble choruses tremolo octaves played high on the keyboard are very effective. You will find the audio cassette that is included to be useful as it is split into a right and left channel. The left channel is a horns only side and the right is a rhythm only side. You will also find useful the solo sheets that are included. Your soloists may use these sheets if they are not yet comfortable with improvisation.
