The "Ukranian Bell Carol" was written as part of a large choral work, "Shchedryk" by the Ukranian composer Mykola Leontovych. The tune is an adaptation of a song traditionally sung on the Ukranian New Years Eve, which hopes for good fortune in the year to come. Leontovych added his own lyrics to the old song that proclaim that when Jesus was born, all the bells on earth started ringing in his honor. Philip Sparke used the original melody to create this stirring arrangement.
Technical Notes: Percussion I includes music for snare drum and triangle, percussion II includes music for tubular bells and suspended cymbal, and percussion III includes music for glockenspiel.
