Michael Sweeney has composed a challenging piece for your beginning ensemble. It is a musical journey back 7000 years ago to when Mount Mazama existed. This mountain had a catastrophic eruption and now Crater Lake is all that remains. Sweeney's work paints a wonderful picture of the beautiful and majestic mountain, the fiery eruption, and the calm beauty of Crater Lake. During the eruption of the mountain, there is an unmetered section of music where the students create the eruption by playing random patterns of notes. It is a neat effect that will give you a chance to discuss aleatoric music. Our band set also includes a wonderful tool, a demonstration CD of this work and many others. It will help you perform this piece and plan future concerts!
