These Stephen Bulla arrangements of familiar carols will make this piece a welcome addition to any band's repertoire. Bulla has a great deal of experience arranging for the U.S. Marine Band and White House Orchestra, as well as arrangements for many performers, including Sarah Vaughan, The Manhattan Transfer, Mel Torme and Doc Severinsen. This spectacular work will be a great addition to your next concert.
Technical Notes: The keyboard percussion part is labeled "Mallet Percussion" and is for bells, xylophone and chimes. The timpani part is written for 3 timpani, pitched in A Flat, B and E Flat. The 1st percussion part is for snare drum, suspended cymbal and bass drum. The 2nd percussion part is for triangle, tambourine, sleigh bells, suspended cymbal and crash cymbals.
It is important to ensure that a manageable tempo is maintained with steady sixteenth figures in the woodwinds and saxophones throughout the introduction. Work on having a tight ensemble at measure 27 where the Brass and Clarinets all share the sfz to create a huge bell effect. Balance with the Chimes here as well.
The work is filled with dynamic effects, none more important than the sudden shifts to opposite levels of volume (i.e.: F horns and saxophones at measure 31). Establish an identifiable range of dynamic limits.
As each new tune appears, along with its transitionary introductions, rehearse and anticipate the shift in style per the indicated articulations. For example, the style at measures 47 and 59 requires a strict, even classical approach to the consecutive eighths. This is in great contrast to the flashier, Broadway style scoring found elsewhere in the work.
The bottom end of the band is featured at measure 113. The cup mutes for the trombones will be important here for purposes of balance. Keep the volume low through this section with occasional dynamic swells as indicated.
Tempi must be controlled as the piece reaches its concluding sections. For example, the new tempo at measure 128 (quarter = 132) can't be too fast as it must still maintain a majestic style for the tune. Leave room for another increase in tempo at measure 144 (where the quarter = 144, appropriately).
