The declaration of the Christmas season is brought together in this arrangement of three carols. The piece begins with the familiar "Good Christian Men Rejoice", followed by "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear". The final carol is a less familiar, but very attractive French carol entitled "Master's In This Hall". Each carol declares the good news of Christmas and is a celebration of this festive season.
Technical Notes: The flute/piccolo part is labeled "Flute (Piccolo)". The bass part is labeled "Double Bass". The mallet percussion part is labeled "Keyboard Percussion" is for bells and xylophone. The 1st percussion part is for snare drum and bass drum. The 2nd percussion part is for triangle, tambourine, finger cymbals, suspended cymbal and wind chimes. Note to the conductor: The music begins with a quiet intensity that begins to build as references to the carol "Good Christian Men" are introduced, resulting in an exciting ff at measure 10. A feature of this piece will be a compound 6/8 rhythm followed in the next bar by a simple 3/4 pattern. Students may feel comfortable with the rhythm if they clap it a few times. This first section should be approached in a playful style, especially when references to the tune are made. The clarinets finally introduce "Good Christian Men Rejoice" in full at measure 45 in a leggiero style. Music from the introduction returns at measure 60 and builds up to a much more energetic presentation of this tune at measure 64. "Good Christian Men Rejoice" is now sostenuto, and the accompaniment is marked and crisp. The last phrase of the tune is echoed and leads to the transition at measure 83. The eighth note tempo will stay the same here with the rall. leading into the moderato at measure 88, which should be relaxed, but not too slow. The trumpet presents "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear" as a solo at measure 102, and as always, balance will be important. All eighth notes need to be well connected and played in a cantabile style throughout this section. The percussion establishes an Allegro tempo at measure 133. "Master's In This Hall" must have a playful quality to it. This section continues to build, and the tune is echoed at one-measure intervals beginning at measure 165. Measure 181 brings back a unison presentation of "Master's In This Hall", which then sets up the conclusion at measure 187. The mp is important for allowing the music to build to an exciting conclusion.
