Fantasy On "Yankee Doodle" is a free treatment of one of America's most famous early songs. Premiered in 1995, this concert band piece by Mark Williams is sure to become a standard component of concert band literature.
Technical Notes: The keyboard percussion part is labeled "Mallets (Chimes, Xylophone, Bells, Vibes)". The 1st percussion part is labeled "Percussion I (Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Crash Cymbals, Claves, Guiro, Cowbell)". The 2nd percussion part is labeled "Percussion II (Suspended Cymbal, Tam-Tam, Woodblock, Triangle, Tambourine, Temple Blocks, Timbales)".
This work begins with a vigorous fanfare leading into a humorous statement of the theme by solo tuba. This light, quirky treatment of the theme is followed by a dark, moody variant at measure 25, featuring solo alto saxophone. Special care should be given to the dovetailed eighth notes at measure 33, creating a smooth line without discernible breaks. A spirited Allegro then transforms the mood to one of joyous expectation, with the occasional sections in 7/8 injecting an element of surprise. Students should be constantly aware of eighth-note subdivision in performing the 7/8 measures.
After a lyric episode at measure 93 using fragments of the tune, a Latin percussion vamp eventually leads to a full statement of the theme in half notes, played first in quadrulple time and then double time. The final Maestoso fanfare leads this work to a satisfying and exciting close. (Timpanists are not allowed to be timid on this one!)
