This piece, composed by Anne McGinty, is an ideal piece for any junior high school band. This piece has good, solid scoring, and has enough flexibility to work with the skill level of your band.
Technical Notes: "Amberwood Overture" is in A-B-A form. There are no key changes and the rhythms throughout are simple, thus allowing extra rehearsal time for tone development, as well as for attacks and releases. The attacks are especially important as different instruments are required to make independent entrances. The low A Flat in the bass line is one step below the normal range for this series. This note will, however, be familiar to players just beyond the beginning stages and should present no difficulties since it is always approached stepwise. The division in the upper octave of the bass line creates and optional tenor part for those bands with more than minimum resources. It doubles the horn/tenor saxophone part, both of which are optional instruments. The composition will sound complete with or without the optional part. If the nine stroke snare drum roll has not yet been learned, substitute four sixteenth notes. When this is secure, rebounds may be added. The cymbal player should be instructed in the proper playing technique so the cymbal crashes are convincing and not muffled.
