The title "Danceries", a collection of folk and popular tunes, can be traced back to at least the 17th century. The melodies in this arrangement are a mixture of old and new. The music proceeds from gentle and lilting, to buoyant and full bodied, to tender. There are solos for principal winds and brass. The final movement provides a dramatic and exuberant ending.
Technical Notes: The English horn part is labeled "Cor Anglais (doubling oboe)". The percussion part is for triangle, vibraphone, glockenspiel, suspended cymbal, tambourine, xylophone, side drum, crash cymbals, bass drum, mark tree, sleigh bells and tam-tam.
Performance Note: The double bass part requires a five-string bass. Where a five-string bass is not available alternative notes have been supplied in the double bass part. The bass clarinet part assumes an instrument going down to low C is available. Where such a bass clarinet is not available alternate notes have been added into the part. Where this is not possible the bass clarinet part has been cued into other instruments.
