"Sky Valley Festival" is a great piece that everyone will enjoy rehearsing and performing. From the talented Steve Hodges, "Sky Valley Festival" is destined to become a concert band classic.
Technical Notes: The percussion part is for snare drum, bass drum, crash cymbals, suspended cymbal, and triangle.
Commissioned by the Monroe High School Band in Monroe, Washington, this piece begins with a full, majestic fanfare that leads effectively into the presentation of the main theme at measure 13. This presentation by the tuba, baritone, and bassoon should be smooth and flowing, with the flutes and clarinets contrasting above in a light and buoyant manner. As the melody is passed from section to section during this presentation, the piece should build in intensity and reach a climax two measures before measure 35.
The contrasting minor section at measure 39 should be more flowing and understated, leading to the dynamic transition at measure 47. The coda provides a more rhythmic accompaniment for the main theme, and again the intensity should build, leading to the exciting conclusion. Careful attention to dynamics and articulation markings will insure a rewarding performance of this composition.
