Finally... a solid, creative arrangement of this modern jazz classic made famous by Manhattan Transfer. Larry Norred's treatment is an enjoyable way to teach syncopation and dynamic contrasts.
Technical Notes: The percussion 1 part contains the ride cymbal, crash cymbal, toms, snare drum and bass drum parts.
The percussion 2 part contains the cowbell and tambourine parts.
The keyboard percussion part labeled "Mallet Percussion" contains the vibes and bells parts.
This arrangement of the jazz standard, Birdland, will serve as an excellent vehicle to teach straight eighth rock style to your students. The use of several fp (forte-piano) dynamic marks allow the director the opportunity to teach this effect in recordings of the song for your band to familiarize them with the style (Weather Report, Manhattan Transfer, Maynard Ferguson, etc.). Pay close attention to the dynamic contrasts throughout the arrangement, but especially at measure 40. Be careful to execute a gradual build from measure 57 to the key change at measure 61.
