"Brazil" is one of the best-known Latin standards of all time. Arranger Johnnie Vinson has done a great job of adapting this popular song while maintaining an authentic Latin feel.
Technical Notes: For this band set, the oboe, French horn, and bells parts are optional. The 1st percussion part is marked for snare drum and bass drum. The 2nd percussion part is marked for maracas and cowbells. Teaching aids for the director: This is an easy arrangement for a young concert band of the Latin classic, "Brazil". It will provide a good introduction to this style for young players. The articulation markings in the melody are extremely important to the style of the arrangement. Take care to rehearse them in detail. As a general rule, the melody should be articulated rather smoothly, as if it were being sung. Good balance is essential to a successful performance. Note that the melody is usually marked at least one dynamic level louder than the accompaniment. Be sure that the accompaniment never covers the melody. Don't hesitate to adjust dynamic markings, if necessary to improve balance. (If the band has a large number of low brass players, their dynamic markings may need to be adjusted softer.) In the percussion 1 part, the snare drum should be played with the snares off for a tom-tom effect. In the final measure (measure 50), the rim shots should be played by placing one stick firmly across the head and rim of the drum while striking it with the other stick. The percussion 2 part is important and should be played if at all possible. If additional percussion players are available, other Latin instruments may be added as appropriate. The bell part may be considered optional.
