When the Los Angeles Philharmonic trumpet section was asked to play several short pieces for the Palos Verdes Peninsula Fair, Irving Bush found that short original pieces for four trumpets were difficult to find. He therefore wrote a series of fanfares for various occasions. Along with his "Fanfare For The Peninsula Fare", "Out of The Past" was written to signal the beginning of an ancient happening. "Motion" announces that something exciting is about to occur, and "Present Tense" sets the scene for a contemporary event. Setting the mood with a fanfare can often be very effective.
