Kenneth Alford composed seventeen marches during a 30 year period in the early 1900's. "The Mad Major" is one of the most memorable, and with it your band will transport their audience to London, for the Changing Of The Guard.
Technical Notes: "Mad Major," second in this new series of quarto editions, was Alford's first post-war march, written and published in 1921. Like "Colonel Bogey", with which the series began, it is cast in a "double" three-part form, the first of which allows the tune of the A part to serve, conveniently, as a counterpoint to B. It is for the simple purpose here to clarify, not to alter; dynamic balances and all the notes are, as in the standard march set, expansively re-engraved for the convenience of the players, and therefore contributive to the best stylistic performance. It is recommended that the kettle drums, cymbals (not too big, please), and bass drum dampen only when indicated by the staccato dot, that the bass drum be free of all damping devices, and that it be stroked with a very hard beater.
