Persichetti's "Symphony No 6 for Band" was premiered during the Music Educator's National Conference in 1956. Since its inception, it has become a standard of the band repertoire. While technical demands abound throughout, the writing is reasonable and idiomatic. A lot of section writing, relatively safe scoring and avoidance of extreme ranges help to make this piece accessible to experienced high school bands.
Technical Notes: The 1st percussion part is for timpani and suspended cymbal. The 2nd percussion part is for snare drum, suspended cymbal, tambourine, tom-tom, and triangle. The 3rd percussion part is for bass drum, tenor drum, suspended sizzle cymbal, and xylophone.
Persichetti's "Symphony For Band" consists of four movements: Adagio-Allegro, Adagio sostenuto, Allegretto, and Vivace.
