Polish composer and virtuoso pianist Ignacy Jan Paderewski was known as much for his political work as his music. From 1918 to 1921 he actually left his career as a concert pianist to become Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Poland. Once he returned to music he composed a number of works, of which this Menuet, Opus 14 No. 1 is the most widely recognized. It is a piece based on the popular 16th century French dance in 3/4 time called the minuet.
