Upon learning of a serious heart condition in 1966, the Russian composer, Dmitri Shostakovich began to end his life of composing. His works began to take on a sinister, dissonant, and dark shape. This is the final string quartet from Shostakovich. It was composed in 1974 and he died in 1975. From the first downbeat of the work, you can feel his pain and emotion. The piece starts out in a very dark sounding key with the first movement titled Elegy. Even with his heart condition this is one of his greatest works.
