Dmitri Shostakovich lived a relatively short life in Russia from 1915 - 1975. He composed fifteen symphonies and fifteen quartets. Although his life was short his works are among the greatest examples of these classic forms from the twentieth century. You can hear the Russian influenece in these classical works. Quartet No. 13 was composed in 1970, while Shostakovich was dealing with the heart problem that would take his life five years later.
