When you think of great Russian composers, Dmitri Shostakovich should be close to the top of the list. Shostakovich was born and raised in the St. Petersburg area. He lived from 1915 - 1975. He is best known for his symphonies and his fifteen stringquartets. The masterful composer was diagnosed with a heart condition in 1966. After learning the news, his music began to get more angry and dissonate. This string quartet was composed in 1973, just two years before his death. It is among the greatstring quartets today.
