Dmitri Shostakovich lived a relatively short life in Russia from 1915 - 1975. He composed fifteen symphonies and fifteen quartets. Although his life was short his works are among the greatest examples of these classic forms from the twentieth century. Quartet No. 2 was composed in the early years of his life.
