Part of a collection of traditional Zuni songs, "Incantation Upon A Sleeping Infant", arranged by Carlos Troyer, explains the Zuni way of luring the child to sleep. Rather than rocking the baby to sleep or singing a lullaby, the Zuni mother lays the infant in a hammock, places her hand on its head, gazes at it with a steady look, and pronounces an incantation. She half sings and half speaks this chant: "Now rest thee in peace, with thy play mates above; Close thine eyes my baby, Go join in their happy enjoyments, my love, Sleep on, soundly". Maybe it will work for your child, or maybe you will just enjoy playing and singing this sweet song. Leximo Historical Library is happy to bring you this reproduction of a piece of music history.
